Baños de Montemayor - Presentation

The N-630 is the link that crosses this town whose main attraction are the thermal baths, used by the Romans. Their sulphurous and oligometallic waters, that have been declared medicinal and of public utility for more than a century, have been highly recommended to treat rheumatism, arthrosis, respiratory diseases, and ailments of the renal system. Their invigorating properties help reduce stress. It is the ideal place to relax, but at the same time, visit the monuments and the routes that surround it. The Roman road has been well preserved.

The Iglesia de Santa María de la Asunción, declared Monumento Histórico Artístico, has a Plateresque façade and a diamond-shaped tower from the 17th century. Inside there is an altarpiece and an organ from the 18th century. The Iglesia de Santa Catalina is from the 16th century and nowadays it is the town’s auditorium. It has an altarpiece from the 17th century, and a collection of old photographs “Miradas de Baños”. It is highly recommended to visit Baños’ old houses and mansions, some of which were built in the Modernist and Belle Époque style, and others built with granite and huge cast-iron balconies. In order to get a complete sense of our popular architecture in northern Extremadura the Calles Castañar and Triana should not be missed. Visitors should come to El Centro de Interpretación General de la Vía de la Plata, where they will be able to understand all of the important aspects that this bimillenary route had on its way to Extremadura. In El Centro de Interpretación de la Artesanía del Castaño there is wide information about basket making with chestnuts. In a beautiful spot by the river, there is an old mill from the 18th century which was restored and where tourists can learn about the harvest and grinding of the cereals.

It is important to mention its two spas. The old one has a thermal bath with two beautiful swimming pools in a subterranean vaulted hall. There is also a small museum with diverse vestiges used during different periods of time for the baths. The new building modern installations have been recognized as one of the most important in Spain.
