Hervás - Presentation

The famous Spanish writer Unamuno once said : “Hervás, con sus castañares recoletos en la falda de la sierra que hace espalda de Castilla”, which means Hervás, with it's beautiful chesnut trees on the back of the mountain that give's it's back to Castilla.  It is surrounded by moutains on the northern side except on the southeastern part.

It is the main center of activity in the area. It's Jewish quarter, declared a Historic Center since 1969, is well- kept and is part of the most important Jewish Quarters in Spain. You can appreciate the Jewish quarter's houses while walking through the narrow streets of Hervás. The most beautiful streets to see are "Amistad Judeo Cristiano, la del Vado (where the old hospital was located), and la del Rabilero (known for its shopping area and cheap eateries).

There is a strong craftworks tradition in this town, that is why there are so many furniture factories, basket makers, leather goods, etc that are well known from Hervás. Every year they celebrate their Jewish past with festivals such as the "Fiesta de los Conversos", which is the last weekend of June. Many people participate in this festival. They have a skit showing how the conversions took place.

Hervás has an important natural patrimony. The Castañar Gallego mountain is one of the most important of these type in all of Europe. Some of the most fascinating trails are La Chorrera, el Pinajarro, Ambroz Woods, and the Heidi Trail. These a great for bicycle lovers too!

The San Juan Bautista Church and Santa Maria Church also deserve a visit so you can appreciate their style that date back to the re - conquering of Spain. The Castle's lookout is elevated over the rest of the tower and offers a splendid panoramic view.

The Davila Palace, a palace from XVIII, houses Enrique Peréz Comendador and his wife, Magdalena Leroux masterpieces. The Motorcycle and Classical Car Museum is also very original.
